I need a moment please

Wellness can be a term or phrase banded about very easily, but we truly need to consider how we embed wellness into our routines both at work and at home congruently. It’s more than a self-care activity on a Saturday. It’s about lifestyle, habit and boundaries.

Tune in and find out about the strategies that we are using to keep wellness as a priority for our wellbeing. Our special guest this episode is Ash Alves, a wellness advocate.

Tonight Matthew, I’m gonna be….

Who is still buying into the staircase, or vertical career trajectory? Many of us have learnt that as with most things in life, our career journeys are not always straightforward.

The BWW team, along with special guest, career changer – Kathryn Tingle, are exploring the ways in which we can yield our skills, transfer them and pivot. If you are considering a career change, this episode is for you.

I can’t come and kill myself

Most of us are familiar with the term “burnout’, but in this episode, the BWW team interrogate the structures that impact the way Black women view and experience it professionally.

We discuss the challenges of ideologies such as #BlackGirlMagic and #BlackExcellence, cultural pressure to work “twice as hard”, and social media pressure in this age of “be your own boss”.

How can we adjust our approach to work, to ensure work-life balance, good health, and satisfaction in slaying in our own lanes? What does that look like in this new corona-impacted world? We explore this and more.

Let’s Talk About It – The B-Word with Break Concrete Podcast

For this ‘Let’s Talk About It’, we have teamed up with a fellow Black Woman Working, Cheryl-Lyn Bentley of the Break Concrete Podcast. Break Concrete Podcast centres on the experience of Black Women Working in the States and we are discussing the B-Words: British Culture, Black Lives Matter and Burnout for us and in comparison to our stateside sisters.

We chat about how the current events ranging from remote work, coronavirus lockdown, and racial unrest lead to burnout, and how some of these issues are showing up and impacting Black women in the U.S. and the U.K. We also take a look at the difference in work culture between the U.K. and U.S. and Black women professionals can find a happy work life balance.

Let’s Talk About It – Whose Reparations?!

It’s been a while but we are back with a ‘let’s talk about it’ segment and the BWW team are discussing reparations after two large companies announced that they will be allocating a specific budget targeted at BAME initiatives, following the spotlight being on the Slavery Compensation Act amidst the #BlackLivesMatter campaign.

Where do we go from here?

First and foremost, thank you for all of your ongoing support and welcome to those who are new to the BWW Podcast.

It’s the final episode of the season and we definitely couldn’t predict the nature of this conversation. Taking an assessment of current times, we discuss where we are at in our own working lives during quarantine. Importantly for us, we consider the ways in which COVID-19 and the surge of the Black Lives Matter Movement can offer an open for real change moving forward.

As always shout out to our production family at the Selby Centre, can’t wait to see you all again.
